Lawmakers from Detroit look to reduce auto insurance rates with package of bills

DETROIT, MI -- A group of state lawmakers from Metro Detroit plan to unveil a package of bills seeking to reduce auto insurance rates.

Democratic state Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Thomas F. Stallworth III, Phil Cavanagh, Alberta Tinsley-Talabi, Brian Banks, Fred Durhal Jr., David Nathan, Harvey Santana and Rose Mary Robinson plan to reveal the legislation in a 1 p.m. press conference.

"The bills will fight fraud, create transparency, hold insurance companies accountable, and save motorists’ money by lowering rates," Tlaib's office announced.

A separate set of auto insurance reforms backed by Gov. Rick Snyder was introduced in the legislature this year, gaining some committee approval, but facing opposition from activists who oppose limits to required medical care coverage for auto injuries.

One study last year showed that Michigan drivers spend a larger portion of their salaries on car insurance than residents of any other state. Another study found that Detroit had the highest rates in the nation with an average annual premium of $5,941.
